Another busy week of developments were noteworthy for the activity coming out of the data centre space.

Expansion activity shows no signs of slowing down in primary markets around the world.AirTrunk is developing a major hyperscale site in Hong Kong, while Iron Mountain is expanding in Amsterdam and London with pre-let capacity. Elsewhere, DigiPlex is building in Oslo, Norway, Aligned Energy is expanding in Dallas and Digital Realty opened a new London Docklands data centre.

Hyperscale remains a key driver of data centre demand and this past week, Oracle outlined its global expansion plans, which are sure to have a positive impact on the third party data centre market. Operators like Cologix are going after this kind of opportunity andjust secured $500m in capital to fund its growth initiatives, which is undoubtedly going to include hyperscale builds.

There were also a number of strategic developments of note on the data centre side. Singapore’s Mapletree acquired a portfolio of data centres from Digital Realty and established a joint venture, in Canada, Summit REIT sold interests in Toronto and Montreal-based wholesale data centres and New York Internet acquired a data centre in Chicago from Navisite.

The M&A arena was busy as well and the past week saw SBA Communications become the second wireless tower owner this year to buy a data centre operator with the purchase of New Continuum Data Centers.

The cloud side continues to move along and there continues to be value driven in focused areas such as application hosting and managed third party cloud. Velocity and Logicworksboth had managed third party cloud wins, while Faction continues to help move customers to VMware Cloud on AWS and in the process, identifying new pain points that service providers are well-positioned to address.

Finally, security vendor Acronis closed a nearly $150m investment from Goldman Sachsas it looks to move into growth mode. Acronis will be holding Acronis Summit in Miami on October 13-16. Structure Research is a sponsor of the event that will be well attended by the service provider/MSP community.
