Hyperscale, edge-hyperscale, earnings, asset-light

The sector continued to push forward, with hyperscale cloud continuing to expand on a global basis. Meanwhile, there was shuffling in executive circles and amid earnings season, there were disclosures from privately held companies.

Hyperscale footprints continue to go global. Google opened a new region in Seoul, South Korea and confirmed plans for other new geographies and expansions in 2020. Meanwhile, reports indicate AWS is set to build in India and Microsoft is planning to enter Mexico. Hyperscale is not the only driver of colocation demand. There are smaller edge-hyperscale deployments being looked at and Cologix is looking to position for this demand in Vancouver.

Earnings season is in full swing and we took a closer look at results coming from Digital RealtyGoDaddy and CenturyLink. There were also disclosures from privately held providers with Digital Ocean and Switzerland’s Hostpoint sharing some insights into their progress. Last week, we looked at Google’s cloud results and found an interesting data point on the growth of its G Suite business.

There was a big change at IBM as CEO Ginni Rometty will be stepping down, while CyrusOne will be looking for a new CEO as Gary Wojtaszek confirmed plans to leave the company.

The impact of hyperscale cloud continues to be felt across the sector as more organizations move to cloud. This movement includes increasing numbers of service providers and some of them are choosing Google’s platform rather than AWS. SiteGround has been in the hosting business for quite some time and will be going asset-light and moving its infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform.
