The sector had a busy week, with hyperscale expansions, strategic activity and technology acquisitions.

Global cloud expansion continues and in the past week we saw Oracle Cloud reveal plans to build a new cloud infrastructure region in Morocco, while OVHcloud added its second cloud region in Canada near Toronto. The hyperscale clouds have been shifting their approach to how they charge egress fees and Microsoft followed recent moves by AWS and Google Cloud.

There were a number of notable strategic developments in the past week. Rackspace completed some long awaited financial restructuring, Ardian reached the finish line for the acquisition of VerneEdgeCore closed on some debtDigital Core REIT upped its stake in a key Digital Realty campus in Frankfurt, while Gcore acquired StackPath’s application security technology.

The strategic landscape continues to see activity around data centre carve-outs. There were no deals in the past week, but there is chatter emerging in Japan about the possibility of spinning out NEC’s data centre portfolio. In this slower M&A environment, there have been fewer purchases of technology of late, but Cloudflare recently acquired a company called Nefeli, a deal aimed at boosting its multi-cloud network management capabilities.

Our quarterly bulletin is now being delivered through our regular emails (for clients only) and we look at various important themes and dynamics, including master-planned data centres, webscale and managed public cloud product development, sovereign cloudshyperscale CapExgrowth dynamics, various AI developments and other topics.

Finally, we have a bit more from earnings season. Akamai reported its 4Q23 and FY23 results, which included splits for the cloud computing business.
